Do I Need an Eye Cream?
One of the most hotly debated topics in the beauty world is whether or not we should be using an eye cream? Is it just a marketing ploy to get us spending more money or is that little pot of lotion truly a hard-hitting anti-ager?
The skin around our eyes is six times thinner than the skin on the rest of our face, which means you should always tread carefully when it comes to this gentle area. Pulling and tugging at the skin (especially when applying eyeliner) can cause fine lines to appear, while applying a lot of cream can actually lead to puffiness and, in some cases, milia those small pesky hard white spots.
When not to use eye cream
In your teens and twenties, applying your regular serums and creams to the eye area should be adequate. The tip is to apply cream in that area with your ring finger, as it naturally uses less pressure, and to gently tap the cream onto the orbital bone (the eye socket) so you don't get too close to your actual eyeball!
Of course, if you feel that in your early to mid twenties you could benefit from a lightweight eye cream by all means treat yourself, but know that a lightweight hyaluronic acid serum and a light face cream will work wonders too.
When to start using eye cream
Late twenties to early thirties is a good time to invest in a targeted product. Something lightweight and packed with antioxidants will protect that delicate skin from environmental aggressors, while a little gentle massage can help to relieve unwanted puffiness. Some eye creams are brightening to help tackle dark circles, like Goldfaden MD's Bright Eyes while others have hydrating and collagen-boosting properties like Freck So Jelly Collagen Eye Cream to fight the onset of lines. Ren's Vita Mineral Active 7 Eye Gel does both, hydrating to plump out fine lines and brightening.
