I'd Love to Wear... Matte Lipstick, But I Don't Know How
Matte lipstick has been a huge trend for the last few years and while we're more open to cream and gloss finishes these days the matte trend is seeing no signs of waning. Why? Well, matte lipstick can look seriously chic and has unrivalled staying power.
The key to getting matte lipstick right is to know how to apply it like a pro. Enter The Beauty Editor's resident makeup artist Magdalena Smyczek. This is her 5-step guide to applying matte lipstick right, so you can channel your inner makeup guru and show off a matte lip this weekend.
Step One: To start, make sure you exfoliate your lips so you have a smooth base. It doesn't have to be a specific brand, you can make a scrub at home by mixing sugar with coconut oil and massage it onto your lips. There is nothing worse than flaky skin and matte lipstick.
Step Two: Once you have removed the scrub, apply a mask or lip balm and, if you have time, leave it to sink in.
Step Three: Gently dab the lips with a tissue to remove any excess balm. To make sure your lipstick lasts all day you can either apply a lip primer or lip pencil all over your lips for a long-wear effect.
Step Four: When it comes to applying the matte lipstick, think about the effect you want. If you want a stain, apply the lipstick with your finger and press it on. For a more intense look apply it straight from the bullet. To get a really precise finish use a lip brush.
Step Five: Keep a lip balm with you so you can hydrate your lips on the go if they start to look flaky or feel dry.
